CBT.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a tried and true intervention that is among the most popular in the US. CBT helps you understand how your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and triggers are all connected. CBT helps you become more in-tune with and accepting of your inner world. It also helps you to identify core beliefs that are keeping you stuck while creating healthier, more balanced thought patterns.

Both CBT and DBT are generally a talk therapy, although other activities can be used too to support you on your unique journey. Many of our clients (especially our teens!) enjoy incorporating journaling, art, movement, or games into their sessions.

DBT

Dialectical behavioral therapy, or DBT, is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy. DBT has 4 pillars:

  • Distress tolerance: Helping you to build skills to be able to manage strong emotions and not feel overwhelmed by them. Think of this as emotional defense.

  • Emotion regulation: Helping you to stay even-keeled and develop healthy self-care habits. Think of this as emotional offense.

  • Mindfulness: Being aware of what is happening in your mind, in your body, and in your surroundings - then putting words to it.

  • Interpersonal effectiveness: A fancy way of saying “social skills,” interpersonal effectiveness helps you get your needs met and express your feelings or needs without damaging your relationship with yourself or with others.
